AusTender search tips: filters that work (and when matching beats keywords)

AusTender is the official federal marketplace. It is comprehensive — and easy to miss the tenders that matter if you rely on a few keywords. These tips are for suppliers who already know AusTender exists and want fewer missed ATMs, not another generic "register on the portal" checklist.

Start with the right object

Do not confuse the two jobs:

  • Approaches to market — opportunities still open (or recently closed). This is tender search.
  • Contract notices — awards already made. This is competitor and agency intelligence.

Searching awards when you meant open ATMs wastes time. Reviewing awards when you are preparing a bid is useful context — different tool, different intent. If your team argues about "why didn't we see that tender" while pointing at a contract notice, you were never searching for an open opportunity.

Filters that usually help

  1. Agency or portfolio — when you know your buyers
  2. Category / UNSPSC — when your work has a clean code
  3. Keywords from past winning descriptions — pull language from contracts peers actually won, not only marketing copy
  4. Date windows — so you are not paging ancient closed ATMs

Combine filters. A broad keyword alone across all agencies is how alert fatigue starts. Prefer a tight agency list plus one strong category over twenty vague synonyms.

When you borrow keywords, copy phrases from awarded work in your niche — not from your homepage hero line. Agencies reuse their own wording more often than they reuse yours.

Why keyword search still fails good suppliers

Keyword search asks: "Does this ATM contain my words?"

That fails good suppliers because:

  • Agencies write ATMs in their own jargon
  • Your trading name is not how buyers describe the work
  • Renewals often are not "new category" searches — they are quiet continuations of existing spend
  • Panels and standing arrangements change how opportunities are framed

If your peers keep winning work you never saw in saved searches, the gap is matching, not effort. More alerts will not fix a matching problem.

Matching vs searching

ApproachQuestion it answers
Keyword / filter searchDoes this notice contain my words or codes?
MatchingDoes this open tender or renewal look like work companies like mine already win?

TenderTracker Opportunity Radar is built for the second question on federal AusTender data:

  • Matcher — ties open tenders and renewals to your company profile
  • Ranker — reorders so better-fit deals rise
  • Monday digest — one weekly email of matched deals

Radar is paid. Basic supplier and contract research on TenderTracker stays available to guests. We are not replacing AusTender; we are prioritising what deserves a bid review.

A simple weekly workflow

  1. Quick AusTender pass for named agencies you care about
  2. Let Radar surface matched open tenders and renewals
  3. Use supplier / contract pages for competitor context before you bid
  4. Kill saved searches that only produce noise — volume is not a KPI
