NSW government contract awards: what buy.nsw data shows SME suppliers
If you searched NSW government contract awards or infrastructure tenders NSW, you probably want two things: what NSW agencies actually buy, and who wins it. Open tenders only show you what is on the market today. Contract awards show the whole pattern: which agencies spend, in which categories, at what size, and which suppliers keep winning.
This guide covers NSW state government contract awards published on buy.nsw. It does not cover councils or standing offer arrangements.
What NSW publishes about awarded contracts
Under the GIPA Act (Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009), NSW agencies have to publish details of contracts worth A$150,000 or more, and many publish smaller ones too. Each award notice usually shows the agency, the supplier and ABN, the contract value, start and end dates, and a category. That is enough to see who wins what, even though the full contract stays private.
The last 12 months in numbers
In the 12 months to 30 October 2026, the NSW state award notices we track show:
| Metric (NSW state awards, 12 months) | Value |
|---|---|
| Contract award notices | 8,090 |
| Total notified value | ~A$42.9b |
| Agencies publishing | 100 |
| Distinct suppliers | 3,968 |
| Median award value | ~A$462k |
| New notices in the last 28 days | 732 |
Most awards are mid-sized. 5,447 notices sat between A$100k and A$1m, 2,140 were between A$1m and A$10m, and only 351 topped A$10m. A median of about A$462k is a size many SMEs can deliver.
Who spends: the top NSW agencies by award count
| Agency | Award notices | Notified value |
|---|---|---|
| HealthShare NSW | 1,432 | ~A$1.13b |
| Transport for NSW | 1,358 | ~A$8.35b |
| NSW Department of Communities and Justice | 969 | ~A$3.59b |
| Sydney Trains | 467 | ~A$774m |
| School Infrastructure | 407 | ~A$3.48b |
| Homes NSW | 373 | ~A$979m |
HealthShare NSW publishes the most notices, but Transport for NSW carries far more value per award. If you sell into infrastructure, Transport for NSW, Sydney Trains and School Infrastructure are where the pipeline is.
What they buy: top categories
| Category | Award notices | Notified value |
|---|---|---|
| Information and technology | 1,195 | ~A$4.32b |
| Healthcare | 1,180 | ~A$894m |
| Construction | 1,039 | ~A$22.2b |
| Professional services (excl. consultancies) | 868 | ~A$1.03b |
| Community and social services | 798 | ~A$2.96b |
| Building and property | 701 | ~A$2.84b |
| Vehicles | 683 | ~A$2.66b |
| Consultancies | 525 | ~A$418m |
Construction is about half of all notified value. For anyone looking at infrastructure tenders in NSW, that is the headline: about 1,000 construction awards worth over A$22b in a year.
Repeat winners vs first-timers
Of the 3,968 suppliers with an NSW state award in the last 12 months, 2,655 won exactly one, 887 won two or three, and 426 won four or more. So NSW awards are not locked up by a few primes. Most suppliers on the list are occasional winners, which leaves room for a new SME that bids in the right category.
In construction, the most frequent winners over the year include Green Timber Tech (18 awards), Specbuilt Constructions (12), Modscape Commercial (10) and Shay Brennan Constructions (9). Those are mostly modular and building-upgrade firms, not tier-one civil contractors. That matches what the size bands show: plenty of mid-sized building work.
How to use NSW award data for BD
- Pick your agencies. Shortlist the two or three agencies above that buy your category.
- Read the awards, not just the tenders. Note the typical value and term for your kind of work.
- Watch end dates. A contract awarded with a two- or three-year term tells you roughly when it comes back to market.
- Benchmark the incumbents. Check who won, how often, and whether they also hold federal work in our supplier directory.
- Compare with federal. If you also sell to the Commonwealth, our awarded tenders guide explains how to read AusTender contract notices the same way.
Next step
TenderTracker puts NSW state contract awards next to federal AusTender data, so you can see who wins in your category in one place instead of two portals.
