By reducing the water infiltration, the capping aims to reduce the migration of hazardous particles through the underlying groundwater and reduce the “overflowing bathtub” effect observed during periods of heavy rainfall. The capping is to perform as an interim solution (with a 10 to 15-year design life) whilst being maintainable and allow for the continued and ongoing monitoring and research activities that are performed at the Site.$1.5M
